Prenatal and Postpartum Physical Therapy Services
Pregnancy puts your body through many changes, including your joints and soft tissue. Added weight from your baby can strain your muscles and joints. Tendons and ligaments can also stretch to accommodate your baby and prepare your body for giving birth. All of these changes can lead to discomfort during pregnancy and after childbirth.
Our women’s health services include prenatal and postpartum care to help your body prepare for and recover from pregnancy. Let’s go over the different ways our PT team can assist you during this exciting time in your life!
Prenatal Services
Are you suffering from lower back pain or hip pain during pregnancy? These are common issues that happen due to bodily changes. You might also have pelvic pain or pain in your sacroiliac (SI) joint — the joint that joins your spine and pelvis.
You may not be able to avoid this discomfort as your body prepares for childbirth, but our services can help ease it and prevent it from getting worse. As part of our prenatal services, we offer all of the following:
- Labor and delivery prep
- Exercise modifications to accommodate pregnancy
- Core strengthening and postural strength
Our physical therapists can help you physically prepare for labor and delivery. These natural parts of childbirth can take a toll on your joints, muscles, and other bodily structures. We can have you do exercises to stay flexible and adjust as your body changes.
If you’re used to working out, you may have to change up your exercises during pregnancy. Our PT experts can recommend exercise modifications that accommodate your condition, ensuring safe workouts.
Working on strengthening your core muscles and posture during pregnancy can help ease lower back pain or other joint pain during pregnancy and ease the recovery process.
Our women’s health prenatal services can address certain conditions that may occur during pregnancy or during postpartum, such as:
- Sciatica: Pain that runs down your leg on one side when the sciatic nerve is inflamed
- Symphysis pubis dysfunction: Pain that flares up where your pubic bones come together, usually due to looser ligaments in the area
- Diastasis recti: Muscle separation in the front of your abdomen due to connective tissue being stretched
Postpartum Services
Going through labor and delivery, whether vaginal birth or C-section, can push your musculoskeletal system to its limits. It’s common to experience soreness in the weeks or even months following childbirth. But our postpartum services are designed to address these physical challenges, such as:
- Neck and/or back pain with breastfeeding
- Return to exercise postpartum
- Scar tissue mobilization after C-section
If you’re nursing, you might experience discomfort in your back or neck muscles. Our PT professionals can do exercises with you that help ease this pain. We can also show you different positions that may help prevent these aches and pains.
Are you looking forward to resuming your usual workout after having a baby? We can guide you through a gradual return to exercise during the postpartum period to help ensure your body recovers safely.
If you have a C-section, the resulting scar tissue may lead to chronic issues, such as ongoing discomfort. We use mobilization to help prevent this tissue from forming knots or lumps that affect your joints.
Pelvic Health
Our services for women’s health in Scottsdale and Phoenix, AZ, aren’t only for female athletes and pregnant or postpartum women. Any woman struggling with pelvic health issues may benefit from our physical therapy services. We address many conditions that affect the pelvis with exercises and treatments that help ease symptoms.
Conditions We Treat
Our PT team can help female patients who are experiencing any of the following conditions due to pregnancy or other causes:
- Urinary incontinence (stress/urge/mixed incontinence): Losing urine or leaking involuntarily when you have a strong urge to pee, when certain activities put pressure on your bladder, or a mix of both
- Constipation: Having trouble passing stool due to medical conditions, lifestyle factors, or other causes
- Pelvic organ prolapse: Having a pelvic organ move out of position and cause a bulge, usually due to vaginal birth
- Dyspareunia: Experiencing pain during intercourse due to irritation, inflammation, or other causes
- Vaginismus: Having your vagina tense up abruptly before penetration, such as intercourse, tampon use, or pelvic examinations
- Vulvodynia: Experiencing ongoing pain, such as burning or stinging, in the vulva due to inflammation, a weakened pelvic floor, or other causes
Any of these conditions can affect your quality of life. But our services are aimed at helping you find relief.
Why Consider Physical Therapy to Support Pelvic Health?
Problems with the pelvis can cause constipation, urinary incontinence, or other issues. This part of your body includes several muscles that perform important functions, like supporting your bowels and bladder. These muscles can also affect sexual function.
Damage or other problems with the pelvic floor, or the muscles in the bottom of your pelvis, may not heal on their own. This can lead to chronic symptoms or issues that impact different areas of your life. Physical therapy addresses these symptoms or conditions, providing you with a road to recovery and relief. Your exact treatment plan might include different techniques or modalities to help strengthen these muscles.
Pelvic Physical Therapy
What specific ways does PT help with pelvic problems? Our office provides several services to help women who are experiencing problems with the pelvic floor or other areas of the pelvis.
Our PT team will evaluate your symptoms to determine the best way to approach pelvic pain or other discomfort. Let’s take a look at what might affect the pelvic floor and how our treatments can help!
Causes of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction
Your pelvic muscles should be able to tighten and relax as needed for certain functions, such as urinating or having bowel movements. When this doesn’t happen, it’s known as pelvic floor dysfunction. You might have a weakened pelvic floor or other pelvic problems from any of the following factors:
- Pregnancy
- Childbirth
- Straining pelvic muscles excessively
- Disorders that affect connective tissues
- Heavy lifting
- Frequent or chronic coughing
- Injuries to the pelvis
- Hysterectomy or other pelvic procedures
- Aging as muscles grow weaker
- Chronic stress
Note that some conditions resemble pelvic floor dysfunction, but they’re not the same. Constipation and pelvic organ prolapse are examples of pelvic-related conditions that aren’t pelvic floor dysfunction.
PT Services for Pelvic Problems
Our physical therapy team at Corrective Physical Therapy provides multiple approaches for addressing pelvic issues. The following are some of the services we may use, depending on the results of a thorough evaluation.
- Soft tissue mobilization: Helps ease tension in pelvic floor muscles and promote recovery
- Massage: Relieves muscle pain and helps prevent tension from building up again
- Pelvic floor muscle training: Helps restore endurance and strength to your pelvic floor muscles
- Bladder training: Guidance on holding urine for longer periods of time gradually to help with urinary incontinence
- Electric stimulation: Provides pain relief and helps restore normal function to the nerves and muscles in the pelvic floor
We also provide guidance on movements and simple exercises you can do at home to help support pelvic health and full pelvic floor functioning.
